Chardonnay

Chardonnay

Chardonnay is hands-down one of the greatest grape varietals. In addition to this grape growing well just about anywhere, it also posseses a flavor that is unique, complex, and delicious. Traditionally, Chardonnay was grown in the Burgundy region of France. However, due to the versatility of this grape, Chardonnay is now cultivated just about everywhere wine grapes are grown.

Chardonnay, as you probably already know is the most popular white wine in the US. This popularity is due to Chardonnay's delicate, subtle flavors. On the nose and palate, Chardonnay provides nice stone fruits such as apples and pears, some citric fruits such as lemons and oranges, and even tropical fruit such as mango, banana and pineapple. Some Chardonnays also have buttery, toasty, oaky, and caramel flavors on the palate and nose.

Chardonnay is also prized for its ability to be paired with food. Since Chardonnay is a lighter and more subtle wine, it is recommended that you pair it with foods are that are also light. Too much flavor will no doubt nullify the wine's contribution to your meal. However, because Chardonnay is so light and refreshing, it does well all by itself--No food necessary!

Some of the better chardonnays include:

Rombauer - A WineGlobe favorite! Come taste one of the BEST Chardonnays being produced today.

Sonoma Cutrer - From the same region as Rombauer. Also very delicious!

Stag's Leap - Remember Stag's Leap? The California winery that upset all of the major 1st Growth Bordeaux producers in a famous 1978 wine tasting event. This Chardonnay is great too!

Groth - Another top California Chardonnay producer!
